Iris & Daffodil were the original ferry boats that crossed the river Mersey. In recognition of their gallant action during WW1 they were allowed to use the prefix "Royal" in front of their names. The original Royal Iris & Royal Daffodil were withdrawn from service many years ago, and Paul wrote the piece "Iris & Daffodil" after a visit to Liverpool and a trip on the replacement ferry.
